X has removed the popular “Dim” display option on the web version of the site, which offered a blue-ish middle ground between the white “Default” mode and the all-black “Lights out” option.
The Dim theme, first introduced in 2016 as Night Mode before being renamed in 2019, offered a softer bluish-gray background.
As of the latest web update on February 12, Dim is no longer available. The change does not currently affect Android or iOS apps, where the theme still appears in settings.
X explains Dim removal
X Head of Product Nikita Bier responded on February 12 following complaints on the platform from users of the Dim mode.
“We don’t have the capacity to support more than two colors right now,” Bier said. He added that the team is reviewing feedback and is looking into lightening the black background on web, though no timeline was given.
The explanation has prompted confusion across social media, with some users questioning how a major platform in 2026 cannot support a third color option. Others raised concerns about eye strain from on pure black OLED screens, particularly at night while browsing.
The move had been signaled before. In 2023, Elon Musk posted about plans to remove Dim entirely after acquiring the company. At the time, Light mode was also mentioned as a potential removal, but that decision was later reversed following user pushback.
For now, the change is limited to the web version. Some users have pointed out that browser extensions or customization tools can partially restore a similar mid-tone effect.
There is no confirmation that Dim will be removed from mobile, but the web update suggests further UI consolidation could still be on the table.
