Palmerston, the UK Foreign Office’s official “chief mouser” who became a viral social media star and symbol of British diplomacy, has died after years of public service and retirement abroad.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed his death in a tribute shared via their official X account on February 16.
“Our Chief Mouser, feline diplomat and former @Battersea_ resident, Palmerston @DiploMog, has sadly passed away at his retirement post in Bermuda,” the department wrote. “Farewell Palmerston, with love and thanks from all your FCDO friends.”
Palmerston was adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2016 and quickly became a regular furry face at the Foreign Office in London. His official role was pest control, but his personality and frequent appearances alongside diplomats helped him gain global attention.
He regularly featured in photos inside government buildings, greeted visitors, and became widely known for his friendly rivalry with Larry the Cat, the chief mouser at 10 Downing Street. Their encounters outside Whitehall offices often went viral, turning Palmerston into one of the most recognizable animals in British public life.
After four years on the job, Palmerston retired in 2020 and moved to live with a Foreign Office official. He later relocated to Bermuda, where he spent his final years away from the spotlight.
Palmerston remained popular online even after retiring, with his account continuing to attract attention from fans who followed his diplomatic career. Now, his legacy as the Foreign Office’s beloved mouser and unofficial ambassador ensures he will be remembered by many.
