A kitten who went viral for her unusually large eyes has now fully recovered from a serious illness that once threatened her sight.

Dorito, a survivor of ocular FIP, stunned social media users with her dramatic appearance, with some even questioning whether she was AI-generated. In reality, her look is the result of a rare medical battle she has now overcome.

FIP, or feline infectious peritonitis, is a virus that can cause severe inflammation in kittens. In Dorito’s case, the inflammation attacked her eyes, blocking fluid drainage and increasing pressure to the point of glaucoma.

Because kittens have a stretchy sclera, even moderate pressure can cause the eyes to enlarge quickly. That pressure led to Dorito’s now signature wide-eyed look.

With antiviral treatment and intensive eye care, the glaucoma has resolved, her corneal ulcers have healed, and her eye pressure is now stable.

Although she has limited vision and requires daily eye drops because her eyelids cannot fully close, an ophthalmologist has confirmed that her eyes are comfortable and safe to keep.

Now fully healthy, Dorito has been left with a distinctive appearance that has captured attention online. While her eyes may gradually reduce in size over time, whether they do or not, she is no longer in pain and is thriving.

Her recovery has turned what began as a serious diagnosis into a story of survival, with Dorito now living as a healthy and unique-looking cat whose incredible eyes tell the story of what she overcame.

A Facebook post from The Bitty Kitty Brigade confirms that Dorito has now found her forever home, at the foster home that has been caring for her.
