A school has asked children to stop singing songs from Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, saying the film’s demon-themed lyrics clash with its Christian values.

As reported by the BBC, Lilliput Church of England Infant School in Dorset, England, has sparked pushback from parents after a message was sent to families explaining that some members of its community were “deeply uncomfortable” with references to demons.

The note revealed that they “associate [demons] with spiritual forces opposed to God and goodness” and asked parents to encourage children not to sing the songs on school grounds.

Acting head teacher Lloyd Allington followed up on Monday, telling parents he had received feedback from others who believe the songs carry positive messages. Even so, he said the school wanted to support anyone who found the themes “challenging”.

KPop Demon Hunters songs banned from school

KPop Demon Hunters surged to the top of Netflix in August to become the platform’s most-viewed film ever. The animated feature follows fictional K-pop trio Huntr/x as they use music and martial-arts skills to fight demons threatening humanity.

One parent told the BBC they were stunned by the ban and called it out. “I thought it was ridiculous. My daughter is very into K-pop and her and all of her little friends love it. “It’s just a harmless, a nice little thing for them to do to get their confidence up,” he said.

While it may have been banned from this particular school, KPop Demon Hunters continues to prove incredibly popular. Since its release on August 23, the film has received a whopping 236 million views on Netflix and over 393 million streaming hours worldwide.

Despite not being greenlit, Director Maggie Kang has also discussed a potential sequel that would delve into a plot they weren’t able to fit into the first film. So, it looks like there could be even more KPop Demons Hunters content on the way.
