Twitch viewership drops to lowest in 5 years amid viewbot crackdown

Twitch has recorded its lowest monthly viewership in five years following a crackdown on viewbots over the summer.

Back in July, Twitch announced that they would be “meaningfully” improving their ability to “identify viewbots, inauthentic viewership, and other potentially fake engagement.” CEO Dan Clancy noted that the Amazon-owned platform would take additional steps to ensure real viewers weren’t affected.

Since then, the platform’s viewership has fallen off a fair bit, with stat-tracking websites like Twitch Tracker and StreamCharts showing downward trends. There have, of course, been spikes too with big events like Ibai’s annual La Velada Del Año and Kai Cenat’s 30 days of summer.

Twitch denied that viewership is in freefall, telling Dexerto: “We’ve seen some misinformation swirling, and a lot of that misinformation includes data pulled from third-party sources. Those numbers are incorrect and are not from Twitch.”

Twitch viewership stats for August 2025

Well, according to StreamCharts’ newest numbers, Twitch’s monthly viewership in August reached a low that it hadn’t hit in five years.

As per their stats, there was a total of 1.41 billion hours of watch time, which was down 9% compared to July. Additionally, average total viewers was down to around 1.9 million – an 8% drop versus the previous month – and peak viewership was down 73%.

This was Twitch’s worst month since March 2020, according to the stat-tracking website. March 2020, of course, marked the start of the global health pandemic.

StreamCharts also estimated that viewbots accounted for 30 million fake hours watched, with around 4,400 channels being “heavily” botted.

Kick, Twitch’s biggest rival in the livestreaming space, has also reportedly been hit by bots. StreamChart’s monthly report suggested that one in six Kick streamers are reliant on viewbots for their viewership.

Unlike Twitch, the Stake-back platform has not addressed the situation nor stated their plans for a clampdown. So, we’ll have to wait and see.
