TikToker Jordon Cox flew to Turkey for six hours to test whether it was cheaper to shop abroad than at his local Tesco.
In a video on his TikTok account, the self-proclaimed ‘Coupon King’ documented a whirlwind return trip to compare supermarket prices in the UK with those in Turkey, calculating whether he could save enough to justify the cost of travel.
Cox said he secured return flights for £33, plus £1.44 for a return tram into the city centre. That meant he needed to save at least £35 on groceries to break even.
Jordon Cox compares Tesco prices to Turkish supermarket haul
Shopping at Turkish supermarket BIM, Cox highlighted several price differences between items abroad and their UK equivalents.
He showed Oral B products priced at £1.71 each, compared to £5 for the same item at Tesco. A multipack of Cocoa Pops cost £2.24, while he claimed the same amount would total more than £10 in the UK. A pack of Doritos was 84p, compared to £2.50 at Tesco. Cox also pointed out 49p Haribo, foundation for £1.46, and wet wipes priced at 18p.
After completing his shop and returning to the UK, Cox calculated that the same basket would have cost £89.31 at Tesco.
“In total, this shop would have been £89 31 in Tesco, but in Turkey I only paid £34 for a total saving of 20 quid,” he said. “Which begs the question, have supermarket prices gone too far?”
“This proves that we are being absolutely ripped off by the supermarkets,” one user commented.
Another said: “That’s some difference! British prices have gone through the roof!”
“I just shop at Aldi or Lidl it’s the same outcome minus flight,” shared a third.
Another massively expensive supermarket is Erewhon, an LA-based grocery store that features $20 bottles of water and $27 Tuna Sushi.
