Part of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and Croatan beaches are closed due to high bacteria levels, according to the city of Virginia Beach. Swimming is prohibited.
The Oceanfront from 22nd-37th streets and Croatan from Aqua Lane to the surfing side at the end of Croatan are closed. Signs will be posted in these areas.
Recent testing by the health department showed bacteria levels do not meet state water quality standards.
These water advisories are usually temporary and common in the summer months, but their presence is closely correlated to the presence of other disease-causing organisms, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
