Spotify has introduced a new in-app messaging feature, allowing users to share music, podcasts and audiobooks directly with friends and family.

The update, called Messages, began rolling out on August 26 and is available to Free and Premium users aged 16 and over in select markets.

The feature allows listeners to tap the share button on the Now Playing screen, select a contact they’ve interacted with on Spotify, and send a direct message. These chats support text replies, emoji reactions, and shared media. Users can find their conversations by tapping their profile icon, which will display an inbox of message threads.

Spotify said suggested contacts will include those who have previously collaborated on playlists, joined group listening sessions through Jams or Blends, or participated in event planning features. Messages are encrypted while in transit and at rest, though not end-to-end encrypted.

The company has added safety tools including the ability to accept or decline requests, block senders, and report content that violates policy.

Spotify’s second attempt at messaging

This marks the return of messaging on Spotify after the company discontinued its original direct messaging system in 2017. The launch comes as Spotify reported 696 million monthly active users in the second quarter of 2025, part of its wider goal of reaching 1 billion users.

The addition of Messages is seen as a push to make the platform more social and differentiate it from competitors such as Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music.

The feature is rolling out gradually worldwide, and Spotify confirmed that all eligible users will gain access in the coming weeks. This comes just days after the music streaming platform revealed a new DJ feature that lets users customize transitions between songs.
