Deputies in Maine rushed to what they thought was a potential emergency after reports of a woman screaming for help, only to discover the noise was coming from a goat.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in around 8:30 p.m. on August 30 near railroad tracks in Etna. A caller told dispatchers they heard repeated cries for help, prompting officers to search the area.
When they arrived, deputies quickly realized no one was in danger. The source of the screams was Simon, a 1-year-old Nigerian dwarf goat from Oak Shade Farm. His loud, human-like bleats had been mistaken for a distressed person.
Goat behind the commotion
Simon’s owner, Devon Hawes, explained that the young goat is unusually vocal. “He’s just got a lot to say,” she told local outlets, adding that the family wasn’t surprised their pet’s cries raised alarm.
The sheriff’s office described the incident as an “unusual situation” but said it ended with laughter rather than concern. The Hawes family later shared the story on Facebook, where community members joked about the false alarm.
