Plumbing and manufacturing company Kohler has created a toilet-mounted device that scans the contents of your bowel movements to deliver detailed health insights straight to your phone.

Similar in size to a toilet rim block, the gadget, attached to the outside of the bowl, uses a set of optical sensors to analyze stool and urine for hydration, gut health, and even signs of blood.

The device, researched over 10 years and available to pre-order for $599, requires an additional annual subscription to access all the recorded data, which is relayed to the user via a phone app.

How it works

Before sitting, users sign in with a fingerprint-enabled remote, with Kohler stating that all data is encrypted and stored privately and purpose-built to provide advanced health tracking at home, but it’s not without limits.

The device struggles with darker-colored toilet bowls due to lighting issues, presumably preventing the built-in camera from accurately scanning toilet contents. The subscription model also adds more cost to an already pricey gadget.

The device attaches to the outside of the toilet and uses a camera to analyze its contents.

The Dekoda product page doesn’t state when pre-orders are expected to ship, though does state that it’s currently only available to customers in the U.S.

Kohler isn’t the only commercial company attempting to make toilet trips more novel. On October 18, toilet roll brand Charmin announced that its massive “Forever Roll” of toilet paper had begun rolling out in stores across the U.S.
