Legendary Super Smash Bros player Mew2King says he won’t get a minimum wage job, despite only making $2 an hour on Twitch.
Jason ‘Mew2King’ Zimmerman hasn’t been competing in Melee tournaments for years, but was once one of the top players the game has ever seen.
Along with Armada, PPMD, Mang0 and Hungrybox, Zimmerman was one of the “Five Gods” of Melee – but his success in the past hasn’t translated into profit.
In a new clip from his stream, Mew2King revealed how much he really makes streaming and how he won’t get a real job, because he prefers to just game.
Mew2King refuses to get minimum wage job despite low streaming income
According to Zimmerman, he was speaking with Jigglypuff main Hungrybox, who advised him to get a minimum wage job.
“I told him I make like $2 an hour with 20-30 viewers and high ads,” he explained. “Yeah, $2 an hour isn’t that good.”
Mew2King noted that he relies heavily on raids and broadcasting overnight to get paid for people lurking.
“Everyone else has a normal life schedule and a lot of friends, and they go offline at 11 PM or whatever, then I might as well start around that, right? It just makes sense. I basically just do what I need to do to survive.”
The Smash player questioned his streaming talent, stating that he’s been doing this for tens of thousands of hours over many years.
As for the advice Hbox gave him, Mew2King was adamantly opposed.
“I’m just gonna do what I love, which is gaming. I’m just gonna do that forever.”
One thing that could boost Zimmerman’s stats would be a new Smash game. Although one hasn’t been confirmed yet, comments from series creator Sakurai heavily suggest one is in development.
However, it remains unclear if it will be a totally new installment or a “deluxe” version of Smash Ultimate with more fighters and stages.
Until then, we’ll have to see if Mew2King can pivot his content to get more viewers or if he ends up rethinking his decision and gets a job to earn more money.
