McDonald’s Japan is kicking off 2026 with a major video game crossover. The fast food giant has partnered with Square Enix to celebrate the Dragon Quest series through special burgers, drinks, and limited merchandise.
The collaboration began in late 2025 and runs into early 2026. It is structured as a multi-phase campaign. The first phase, labeled Vol. 1, puts the spotlight on the franchise’s iconic mascot, the Slime.
Fans can grab a unique set of collectible figures called Slime in Slime. The toys are designed like nesting dolls. Smaller figures fit neatly inside larger ones. The five-piece set includes classic blue Slimes, along with versions inspired by McDonald’s characters. Buyers will find Grimace, Birdie, the Hamburglar, and a tiny Metal Slime.
These collectibles are not part of a Happy Meal. Customers must purchase them separately. The price for the full set is roughly $20 USD. That mirrors how McDonald’s handled its Evangelion collab in 2024, when premium figures were sold outside kids meals.
Getting the nesting dolls is not simple. McDonald’s is using a lottery system to manage demand. To guarantee a chance at purchase, fans must apply through the official McDonald’s Japan app. Each participant redeems 50 My McDonald’s Reward points for entry. Orders placed via mobile receive an extra entry.
McDonald’s goes all-in with Dragon Quest burgers and drinks
The food side of the promotion officially launched on January 7, 2026. Three themed sandwiches lead the menu. Each burger arrives in a special illustration wrapper styled after Dragon Quest artwork.
First up is the Thick-Sliced Beef and Potato Consommé Pepper Mayo. The sandwich features a beef patty paired with a thick hash brown. Smoked bacon sits on top. Seasonings include smoked soy sauce, garlic, black pepper, consommé, and mayonnaise.
The second option is Hot Chili Tartar Chicken. This item swaps beef for a chicken cutlet. Cheddar cheese is layered with spicy garlic tomato sauce and tartar sauce.
The final entry is Cheese Double Teriyaki. It includes two pork patties coated in teriyaki glaze. Cheddar cheese, lettuce, and sweet mayonnaise complete the build.
To wash everything down, McDonald’s has added a Slime-inspired McFizz drink. The chain says the flavor profile of a Slime tastes similar to yogurt. The beverage is topped with Slime branding to match the rest of the campaign.
McDonald’s locations across Asia have embraced video game promotions in recent years. Japan rolled out this event after a string of successful regional tie-ins. In 2025, the company collaborated with Street Fighter for fighting game-themed meals.
Meanwhile, China hosted promotions for the Mid-Autumn Festival and the hit AAA title Black Myth Wukong.
