McDonald’s became one of the biggest sock sellers in the world last December thanks to its limited-time Grinch Meal, according to a franchisee.

The holiday promotion, which bundled themed socks with select meals, quickly sold out at many locations. As customers questioned why more inventory was not produced, one franchisee shared new details about just how many pairs were sold.

In a February 17 post on X, a McDonald’s franchise owner revealed: “We literally bought every pair we could. The largest sock manufacturer produces about 1.8 million pairs per day in its factory. We sold just under 20M Grinch socks in the US alone, and it took many months to secure this supply and have it delivered to the restaurants.”

The franchisee added that the total represented enough socks for 7.4% of the adult population in the United States.

The claim came in response to another viral post from a user named Pat Buckley, who wrote: “It’s actually kind of insane McDonald’s was the largest seller of socks in the world for a week in December. 50 million pairs sold globally thanks to their Grinch happy meal deal.”

McDonald’s reportedly sold 50 million pairs globally

The Grinch Meal was released as part of McDonald’s seasonal promotions in December, with the branded socks included while supplies lasted. Locations across the US reported running out as demand surged during the holiday period.

Since the Grinch meal’s success in December, McDonald’s has continued to release collab meals and new products for customers to enjoy, including the OVO meal and Franks Red Hot menu in Canada.
