A man in China has had his lawsuit against a store owner dismissed after he sued over losing more than $130,000 on lottery tickets.
If you lose a wager, it can feel like a personal slight. You backed something that you believed in, and ended up losing money when it promised some riches. With the lottery, things can be a little different. You’re going up against thousands, if not millions, of other players, rather than yourself in a way.
Well, over in China, a man – who has only been named as He, which is his surname – took his massive losses pretty personally.
As per the South China Morning Post, the Hefei-based man ended up suing a store owner, a sales agent, and the lottery management centre for $130,000 – 900,000 yuan – for losing.

The sales agent, who has only been identified as Zhang, would buy the tickets for He, using the instructions given by He. However, Zhang reportedly sent a letter warning him of the risks of spending such large quantities of money on the tickets.
According to the report, He went ahead with paying for the tickets, but when he found out he’d lost, he decided to sue Zhang and the management centre.
He had demanded that he be repaid the 900,000 yuan he spent on tickets, plus interest. However, the case was dismissed by a judge in early February.
“Buying lottery tickets might possibly bring a big prize, but there is also a big risk of loss. Lottery players should be rational and cautious when buying lottery tickets, especially when it involves a lot of money,” the judge told the media.
He lost 900,00 yuan.
It is one of the wilder stories about playing the lottery that have surfaced over the last few months. That includes one in Norway where the lottery had to apologize after telling thousands of players they’d won big.
Another story involved a woman winning $150,000 in Virginia after asking ChatGPT to pick some numbers for her. However, she wanted to donate every single penny to charity.
