A Taiwanese man in his 50s has died from lead poisoning after using the same thermos mug for the last 30 years.

Whether it’s a glass, a coffee cup, a mug, or a travel cup, everyone has their go-to pick from the cupboard. Some even leave their favorite mugs at the office for work, just so they’ve got it every single day.

However, over in Taiwan, Nephrologist Hung Yung-hsiang reported the case of a man in his 50s who passed away after using his favorite thermos mug for the last 30 years.

Taking the case to television, Yung-hsiang noted that the man crashed his car into a shop on his way to work and was found to be disoriented by doctors. He was taken to hospital for tests, where he was admitted to the Nephrology specialists.

Doctor warns about using same cup for years

After the man was found to have severe anemia, cerebral cortical atrophy, and abnormal kidney function, Nephrologists discovered he’d suffered from severe lead poisoning due to his thermos mug rusting.

Yung-hsiang reported that the man had lost taste for food and he’d been fatigued, which were both signs of the recently discovered lead posioning.

He warned that people should be changing their thermos’ every few years to avoid possible similar sicknesses.

The doctor has repeatedly taken to Facebook to share warnings from stories of his patients. This includes another man, Mr Li, who suffered kidney failure after drinking a cup of coffee every day using stale beans.

“Mr. Li told me, “Dr. Hong, I thought heating the coffee would be fine,” he posted. “This isn’t saving money; it’s gambling with your kidney health for the rest of your life.”
