A content creator has built an accessory that allows car owners to look out for their fellow drivers stuck behind the wheel by allowing them to scroll TikTok videos simply by honking their horn.
The device was created by Unnecessary Inventions, who shared a video explaining how the setup works and why he built it. The idea, according to the creator, was to make traffic “a little bit more enjoyable” by turning impatient honks into a way to interact with a TikTok feed mounted to the back of a car.
How the honk-controlled TikTok device works
In the video, Unnecessary Inventions explains that the device attaches to a vehicle and features a tablet displaying a TikTok video feed, along with an integrated microphone. When a car behind honks its horn, the microphone detects the noise and triggers the tablet to scroll to the next video.
To make that happen, the channel’s owner, Matty Benedetto, started with a circuit board from an existing device designed to wirelessly scroll TikTok using a physical button.
He soldered wires directly to the button, allowing the circuit to be shorted manually. When the circuit is shorted, the board interprets it as a button press and automatically scrolls to the next video.
From there, a microprocessor was added and connected to a microphone. The microphone was programmed to react to loud sounds, so that any honk detected would short the circuit and trigger the same scrolling action.
The final build involved 3D printing additional parts to house the tablet and electronics, then attaching a large magnet so the entire unit could stick securely to a car.
Whether the so-called “Honk 2 Swipe” device would be considered road legal is another matter entirely.
