A man has been arrested in Auckland, New Zealand, for theft after allegedly swallowing a $19,000 Fabergé egg, and now he has police waiting for the results of his claim.
When it comes to daring thefts, you might quickly think of something like The Italian Job or Ocean’s 11, but there have been a few more realistic heists over the last few years.
Over in Auckland, New Zealand, a man has claimed to have stolen a $19,000 Fabergé egg by swallowing it. The egg in question is a Fabergé x 007 Limited Edition Octopussy Egg pendant, of which only 50 were made.
According to police reports, the man, who has not been named, entered the Partridge Jewellers store in Auckland on November 28 and ingested the pendant whole. He was arrested shortly after, but officers are still waiting to see if his claims end up being true.
Man set to appear in court again over Fabergé egg theft
The man in question, 32, appeared in court a day later, on November 29, but did not enter into a plea over the theft. He remains in police custody.
“At the time of his arrest, he underwent a medical assessment, and an officer is assigned to constantly monitor the man. At this stage, the pendant has not been recovered,” Inspector Grae Anderson told reporters.
“Given this man is in police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him given the circumstances of what has occurred,” Anderson added.
The man is set to appear in court again on December 8. Police are hoping that nature will have taken it’s course before that, and they’ll have evidence of whether or not he actually swallowed the egg.
As per the BBC, the 32-year-old has history with the jewelry store in question. He was charged with allegedly stealing an iPad from them on 12 November.
There have been a few cases of thieves returning to the scene of their crimes recently, including a bank robber in Texas who targeted the same branch that he’d robbed a decade prior.
