A League of Legends streamer and professional player was muted and received an official warning after she mentioned how her cat flopped on her desk.
Many games have started using AI for chat moderation in online games, causing a bit of a headache with many instances of players being banned or silenced for absurd reasons.
Big developers like Riot and Blizzard have been no exception to this, with players being banned for typing “GGWP” or “nice shot.”
Well, it turns out that talking about your beloved pet maine coon can cause problems as well, as pro LoL player Natalie ‘Stratospanda’ Kristiansen revealed.
LoL pro muted after talking about her cat in chat
In a post on X, Stratospanda revealed a message she received after a game alerting her that “after an automated review,” it was determined that she created a “negative experience for other players.”
Her crime? Well, according to the chat log, the Twitch streamer‘s negative comments had to do with one of her cats.
The messages that caused a fuss were, “My cat is flopping,” “On my desk” and “maine coon.”
Another screengrab provided by the Norwegian player shows that Riot immediately took action, warning that her messages contained “zero-tolerance language” and she had been muted for the rest of the game.
It’s possible that the AI mistook the mention of the maine coon as a slur and couldn’t differentiate between the two. As such, players with the large cat breed may want to avoid mentioning them at the risk of being muted from LoL in the future.
This is likely just the latest instance of a game chat comment being misinterpreted and luckily, this didn’t result in a permaban.
Last year, an Overwatch 2 player went viral after they were banned for calling another user a “noob,” prompting Blizzard to issue an apology.
