The governor of Lagos, Nigeria shared his high opinion of Kai Cenat after meeting the American streaming star during his trip to check up on a school he’d funded in the country.
Kai Cenat famously visited Nigeria in March 2024, where he was taken inside of a local school. Moved by the small classrooms crowded with hundreds of students, the streamer promised to improve the kids’ learning conditions.
“Whatever they tell me you guys need, we’re gonna make sure you guys have [it],” he said during his visit, later revealing plans to use $5M of his own money to fund the construction of an entirely new school there.
He gave fans an update on the situation during his Mafiathon 3 streaming marathon in September 2025, bringing on two representatives from South Africa and Nigeria to explain the construction process.
The main reason construction was delayed was due to complications with the land in Makoko.
During that stream, Kai also revealed that the school was being built in Yaba, Lagos, and all its students would receive a completely free education.
Kai Cenat celebrates grand opening of Makoko Children School
It’s been months since this last update, leaving fans curious about the state of the project. Those viewers finally got their answers on February 3, 2026, when Kai Cenat paid a visit to the school he’d promised to build back in 2024.
The school is named ‘Makoko Children School and Orphanage Home,’ as it is located just outside of Makoko, nicknamed the ‘Venice of Italy’ owing to its many waterways. Kai Cenat celebrated the school’s grand opening with a crowd of excited students and even shook hands with the governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Sanwo-Olu posted about their meeting on X, praising the content creator for his appreciation of Lagos’ culture and their people.
“Today, I received American content creator and streamer Kai Cenat at Lagos House, Marina. It was a pleasure to meet him and hear his perspective on our city,” he wrote.
“He spoke about his experiences and the time he has spent here. This is his second visit to Lagos and his appreciation for the energy and creativity of our people came through clearly.”
Kai also shared footage of their conversation on social media, where Sanwo-Olu told him he was “so proud” of the streamer for funding the school and using his fame to become a positive role model.
“I love coming here,” Kai told him. “Like, genuinely. From the time I landed, the love is crazy. It’s the first country where I’ve felt a different type of love.”
Kai Cenat has been mostly quiet on social media, forgoing streaming to chronicle his journey as a fashion designer on a secondary YouTube channel as he works to launch his own clothing brand, VIVET.
