A Japanese volleyball star has gone viral after accidentally striking a judge with a serve and responding with an apology that instantly stole the spotlight.
The incident took place at the SV League All-Star Games in Kobe on February 1. At the center of it was Yuji Nishida, one of Japan’s most recognizable names in men’s volleyball, who’s known for his explosive jump serve and high-impact attacking play.
During a serving showcase at the All-Star event, one of Nishida’s trademark power serves drifted off course and clipped a courtside line judge. Instead of simply apologising, the pro volleyball player took things further in a viral moment that had everyone laughing.
Apology takes spotlight at volleyball game
After seeing what he hit the line judge with his serve, Nishida immediately sprinted toward her and slid under the net in full dogeza, a traditional Japanese prostration used to express deep remorse.
The ball girl was quickly checked and appeared unharmed, as Nishida repeatedly bowed in apology before continuing to play.
Clips of the moment spread rapidly across social media, with viewers praising Nishida on his comical apology. One post read, “I do declare that Yuji Nishida fella sets a high bar for apologies. The world could use more folks with his spirit, though my floors are thankful there’s just the one.”
Another joked, “Even though he didn’t do anything to me, I forgive him for some reason.” Some viewers even likened the scene to Haikyu!!, joking that Nishida played out a similar scene from the popular volleyball anime series.
Although the apology stole the spotlight, Nishida’s team went on to secure a 3–0 win at the SV League All-Star Games.
