Giorgio Armani, one of the most influential figures in global fashion, has died at the age of 91. His family-owned company confirmed his passing on September 4, 2025.
Armani died peacefully at his home in Milan. The designer had been ill for some time and notably missed Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June, marking the first absence from a runway in his career.
Known as “Re Giorgio” (King Giorgio), Armani oversaw every detail of his brand, from clothing lines to advertising campaigns. His empire spanned haute couture, ready-to-wear, beauty, hotels, restaurants, and home collections, with the Armani Group generating around €2.3 billion annually. At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated between $11 billion and $12 billion.
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house said in a statement.
Public farewell planned in Milan
A public funeral chamber will open in Milan this weekend to allow admirers to pay tribute, followed by a private family ceremony.
Born in Piacenza, Italy, on July 11, 1934, Armani rose to prominence in the mid-1970s after launching his eponymous brand. He popularized unstructured tailoring and minimalist designs that became staples on red carpets and in Hollywood films.
Armani’s lines included Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, and Armani Beauty, all of which helped establish him as a central figure in modern fashion.
