A hockey team in Canada had to apologize to fans after urging them to shower before turning up to games, as fans poked fun at them over it.

Whenever you head out to a concert, sporting event, or even a trip to the cinema, you’ve got to freshen up beforehand so you’re not the source of a bad smell. Not everyone follows this, however, and it can bring down the experience for others in attendance.

Over in Oshawa, Canada, the Oshawa Generals – a junior hockey team in the Oshawa Hockey League – took the step of advising fans to shower and use deodorant before turning up to games.

“If you went to the gym or did something that produced body odour, please shower before attending the game,” the team’s director of ticket sales and service said in a fan-wide email.

Fans poked fun at the now-viral email, turning up to a game with signs saying “I’m with smelly” and “the fans stink? How about the refs?” while also wearing shower caps.

However, the OHL’s last-placed squad has since apologized for the message, asking fans if they can “wash off” the mistake.

“Hey Gensnation, we took a penalty on that last one,” the team posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“It’s not our place to overstep like we did. We are sorry and hopefully we can wash this one off.”

The viral mishap has split plenty of fans, with some saying that the team’s message was right and that they shouldn’t have apologized. “The email was fine. Stinky people are not,” one commenter said on Facebook.

“Asking folks to shower before a game isn’t outrageous,” another said on X. “Sucks to have to apologize for something that needed to be said,” another added.

The Generals managed to win their game after the email, defeating their arch-rival Peterborough Petes by a score of 8-4. “Showered them with goals,” the team posted on X.
