A Dave Chappelle comedy show in Edmonton, Canada was apparently spoiled after hecklers disrupted the set, even as the comedian warned he was running low on time.
Dave Chappelle is considered one of the greats of comedy and among the most popular stand-up acts for years.
With multiple Netflix specials to his name and a legacy in the comedy scene, fans were willing to dish out big bucks to see Chappelle perform live, but the December 3 event left some disappointed due to troublesome crowd members.
Across social media, fans expressed their displeasure at both hecklers and sound issues that they say ruined the big-name performance.
Fans leave Dave Chappelle comedy show early after hecklers disrupt
Fans on social media called out the hecklers, believing their antics would prevent Dave from returning to the Canadian city.
“Wow seeing Dave Chappelle was an absolute bucket list. At the same time Edmonton, what a complete embarrassment of a crowd. More than once he mentioned how much time he had left because the crowd would not shut the f**k up,” one angry fan wrote.
“Edmonton needs to learn how to watch a comedy show. The hecklers and yellers just wrecked everyone’s night out. Congrats,” someone else blasted.
“Edmonton comedy fans: congratulations, you just guaranteed that Dave Chappelle is never coming back, while simultaneously hurting our reputation,” another slammed, adding that he couldn’t “believe Chappelle didn’t walk off.”
“We left early because it was turning out so poorly. When he said he had 10 minutes left and he couldn’t finish a joke we knew it was time to go,” yet another chimed in.
It’s not clear what prompted the heckling, but some believe it had something to do with the sound in the arena, as many complained they couldn’t hear during it.
“You couldn’t hear anything at times, and drunks were pointing it out. When the staff refused to address it, Dave clearly got frustrated and started berating the audience, making the heckling worse,” one attendee explained on Reddit.
A few others commented that at one point, a fistfight broke out in the crowd. According to one user, Chappelle made a joke about Charlie Kirk, which prompted the brawl to begin with 15 minutes left in the show.
Filming at comedy shows is prohibited because comedians don’t want their jokes ruined for future events. As such, it’s unlikely that we’ll see much in the way of footage from this fiasco.
Chappelle himself hasn’t commented on the ordeal and is set to wrap up his brief tour this month, concluding with a few Texas shows in Irving and ending in Dallas.
