Hashtag United have come under fire after announcing two AI influencers for their football squad, as fans have immediately rejected the idea.

Back in 2016, Hashtag United sprang to popularity on YouTube. Founded by Spencer Owen – better known as SpencerFC online – they were a Sunday League football team made up of friends and creators that played challenge matches against other squads.

They have, since then, become a more professional operation. Hashtag – who are also known as The Tags – now play in the English football pyramid, competing in the FA Cup as a semi-professional team. They’re a ways off the Premier League, but within touching distance of the professional ranks.

However, the club has found itself facing backlash from fans for signing two AI influencers – Holly Durango and Harvey Casper.

The announcement came on October 7, with Hashtag playing into things somewhat. “We may have to wait a little longer to see their debuts but as soon as technology allows they will be taking to the pitch,” they said.

“Unfortunately, they are both currently suffering from the fairly rare case of “missing body syndrome” but both miraculously passed their medicals with flying colours.”

Both AI models have had Instagram profiles set up in their names and have already started producing content. This, however, has angered fans.

“We all know you are not dumb, so please stop this stupid BS before it goes further,” one said. “Creating AI-generated thirst trap Instagram accounts and linking them to your football club is embarrassing and pathetic. For a club that built itself on fans from the internet space, you would think you’d know your audience better,” another said

“As a 28-month member and investor in the club I a genuinely considering canceling my membership over this, this is so embarrassing, objectifying and weird. Please reconsider this route,” another added.

“As a fan from the beginning, I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say I hate this and so no purpose for its existence. What was your goal for this Spen?” commented another.

Some commenters suggested that it could very well just be a joke from Hashtag, or a way for them to add virtual players into UFL – the football game, who they are sponsored by. Though, they have yet to address the backlash.
