A woman known as the “Hardcore Grandma” has been going viral in China as she’s been streaming herself using a drone to manage her farm.
When most people think of livestreaming on websites like Twitch and YouTube, they’ll immediately think of gaming. However, the streaming space has expanded significantly beyond that over the years.
Jump into Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, and even Instagram, and you’ll find people streaming all different kinds of content – including breakdowns about sports, political news coverage, and building new tech.
Over in China, 82-year-old Dai Shuying has been going viral for using streaming as her outlet to showcase her skills with a drone, which she uses to plant seeds across her farm and manage rice fields with.

That’s right, the ‘Hardcore Grandma’ as she’s known has been flying “a large agricultural drone” that her grandson bought to fertilise their farmland.
As per the South China Morning Post, Shuying has racked up over 200,000 followers on her “Old Farmer, Gratefully Loved” Douyin and WeChat accounts, where she flies the drone, live streams cooking, and everything else in between.
“With this drone, we can finish all 600 mu in one day. It saves time and effort,” she said. “Life is very happy now. My children are by my side, I enjoy farming, and our income is better than before. At over 80 years of age, being able to see so much of the world is the best part.”
Back in December, People’s Daily Online reported that Shuying’s online success had been generating around 100,000 yuan/$14,000 a year.
“As our short videos gained traction, more and more people began sending me agricultural products, hoping I would help promote them. In the past, villagers had to go to markets; now they can sell directly from home,” her grandson said.
“She still gets a little embarrassed, but she’s happy to help promote our rice and represent our hometown,” he added.
The videos have also attracted visitors to their village, Laomei, where Dai has become a “local internet celebrity.”
