Grok AI has come under immense scrutiny after users began asking the tool to create deepfakes of images posted to X, often without the users’ consent. Now, it has had some major restrictions implemented.
Essentially, Grok AI is the tool used on X. When someone posts something, users can head into the comments and tag Grok to get clarification on a fact, ask a follow-up question, or get it to create an image or video based on the user’s instructions.
What followed was a slew of users asking Grok to create sexualised deepfakes of images posted online without the subjects’ consent, prompting tons of backlash and calls for change. Well, a change has been made, with only a select few able to use the AI tool on the social media site.
Grok AI now only available to paid X users
Following the backlash, any user who hasn’t paid for X’s premium features will be met with the following message when they attempt to get Grok to edit images: “Image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers.”
So, unless you’re paying for the premium version of the site, you’ll be unable to ask Grok AI to perform any image generation or edit a previously uploaded image.
This comes after considerable backlash, to which even the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, vowed to take action against the chatbot, calling it “disgusting” in a radio interview.
Starmer said that: “X need to get their act together and get this material down. And we will take action on this because it’s simply not tolerable.”
Despite this, users can still ask for clarification and use the AI chatbot for other things, but they can no longer use it to edit or generate images.
