Spanish football manager Robert Moreno, who was recently sacked as manager of FC Sochi, has responded after being accused by his former boss of using AI to make all the key decisions.

In different avenues of work, artificial intelligence has always played a big role in things. AI has been used in car manufacturing for years, and it’s been playing a bigger role in sports with analytics.

On the sporting side of things, especially in football, plenty of coaches have admitted to using the likes of ChatGPT to plan out coaching sessions and plot out their own personal progression. In the professional ranks, some have revealed that they’ve used it to give insight into what might be the best way to play a game.

However, Spanish manager Robert Moreno, who was sacked by FC Sochi of the Russian Premier League back in August, was accused by the team’s CEO, Andrei Orlov, of using ChatGPT to make every big decision.

Robert Moreno responds to claims he used AI to do everything

“I asked him, ‘Robert, everything looks great, but when are the players supposed to sleep?’ In the end, we followed the program created by ChatGPT,” Orlov told La Razón, claiming players were told to be awake for 28 hours by AI. “It’s just another tool, why not use it? But for him, ChatGPT became one of the main ones.”

According to Orlov, Moreno used AI to pick his team, make their plans for travel and accommodation.

Moreno, however, disputed that. “I have never used ChatGPT (or any AI) to prepare matches, decide lineups, or choose players,” he told La Razón.

“Like any professional coaching staff, we use analysis tools (video, data, scouting) to organize information, but sporting and human decisions are always made by the coach and his staff.

The report also claimed that Moreno had signed a striker, Arthur Shushenachev, on the back of recommendations from AI.

The Spaniard also downplayed that claim. “Regarding the aforementioned striker: presenting him as an ‘algorithm choice’ isn’t accurate. His signing was a club process, led by the Sporting Director and validated by the coach,” he said.
