A Florida man was caught stealing almost $4000 worth of meat from a supermarket, only to dump it after finding his girlfriend cooking with another man at her home.
Back in early January, Heannys O. Alvarez Reyna, from Cuba, was caught on camera stealing meat from two separate Publix stores. The 30-year-old, who resides in Jacksonville, Florida, entered a Publix in Belle Tore and took $1574.86 worth of beef and lamb with him.
20 minutes later, Alvarez Reyna was spotted walking into a Publix in Island Walk, and went after pork, sirloin, brisket, tenderloin, and personal care items. That, according to CBS 12, was worth around $2084, bringing the total to a smidge under $4000.
The 30-year-old told officers that once he’d finished his meat packing spree, he headed to his girlfriend’s home. However, when he got there, she was cooking with another man, so he left and dumped the meat.
Man arrested after stealing almost $4k worth of meat
Alvarez Reyna was arrested on felony retail theft charges and has been held in a detention facility in Bunnell, Florida.
“This wasn’t just a case of someone trying to ‘meat’ their budget. This was a calculated, ‘high-steaks operation’ that left two stores with significant losses,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said on January 30.
“His relationship may have been past its prime, but stealing isn’t the way to cure what ails you. The bottom line is this: If you steal from our stores, we will catch you and you will ‘meat’ the consequences.”
The sheriff’s office’s Facebook post and meat puns have attracted attention from far and wide, with many chiming in with their own jokes. Others, however, couldn’t believe they were being serious.
“They had too much fun with this one,” one commenter said. “This sounds like a joke,” another added. “I legit thought this was the Onion page for about half of the story,” another chimed in.
