A family in South Africa reportedly “caused chaos” after taking their dead relative to a bank to prove that they were, in fact, dead.
Whenever a family member passes away, someone is usually left to settle their things. This can be annoying when trying to cancel bills for mobile phones, close bank accounts, and end other subscriptions, usually because they want proof that the person in question has actually died.
Typically, you’ll be able to close accounts with a death certificate, but some places can be awkward and want even more proof.
In the case of one family in KwaDukuza, South Africa, they decided to bring the body of their deceased relative to the bank after they were asked for proof of their passing.
Family take dead body as proof for bank
According to ThePost, the family were trying to make a claim on a funeral policy, and ended up dragging their deceased relative’s body into a bank branch.
“When I arrived, there was a lot of commotion. The family stood outside talking to officials, while security cordoned off the bank,” Nikesh Hooblall, the owner of Taurus Medical and Security, said after being told about the body.
“The deceased was in a body bag on the floor inside the bank. It seemed there was a dispute over a funeral policy.”
As per ThePost’s report, the decision to bring the body “caused chaos” for the branch, which ended up closing for a brief period.
Some social media users called it a “clever” move from the family, as it ended any dispute about the passing. “Yes, that is the way to make sure that the deceased is really dead,” one commented.
Others pointed out that banks in KwaDukuza aren’t strangers to this happening, with some saying that it has happened previously – even at the same bank branch. “2nd time round for this branch,” another said.
