Cheating on a partner with AI has become increasingly mentioned as a reason for divorce, and experts believe it is only set to increase further.

Chatbots like ChatGPT and Grok have become an everyday part of life for some people. Many users have utilized it as a fact-checker, others want it to do menial administrative tasks for them, and some have found friendship in it.

There are others, though, who have taken that friendship with AI to a whole new level. There have been cases of people getting married to AI, claiming that the artificial intelligence is their “soulmate,” and have even called off their relationships to make it happen.

Those relationships with AI have even been brought up in divorce proceedings, with an increasing number of destroyed relationships citing the intervention of an artificial figure. And, it is only set to increase further.

AI interference in marriages set to “boom”

That’s according to a new report from Wired, who spoke to attorneys who have started dealing with an increase in cases of divorces from AI interference.

Judges “struggle with what to do about affairs with humans,” Rebecca Palmer, who practices law in Orlando, Florida, told Wired.

“As [AI] continues improving, becoming more realistic, compassionate, and empathetic, more and more people in unhappy marriages who are lonely are going to be going to seek love with a bot,” Elizabeth Yang, a family law attorney in California, also told them, predicting a “boom” in AI-based reasonings for divorces.

People have been seeking relationships with AI.

As noted, we have seen AI used in divorces before. Back in May, a woman went viral after she asked ChatGPT to analyse her husband’s coffee, believing he was fantasizing about another woman.

The Greek man originally laughed off her claims, but was left heartbroken when his wife served him with divorce papers over it and called off their 12-year marriage.
