A Dutch couple have had their marriage annulled after it was found that the ceremony had a ChatGPT speech involved. Seriously.
Artificial intelligence has started playing a big role in the lives of plenty of people. In some cases, AI has been used to make people’s lives a little bit easier. It can shave off some time doing monotonous tasks at work, but it’s not always that helpful.
Some folks have found that different implementations of artificial intelligence actually make things more difficult. We’ve seen that documented over and over again when humans are forced to interact with AI to do something as simple as ordering food.
However, over in the Netherlands, a couple have suffered a pretty big blow in their relationship after the person marrying them used ChatGPT to come up with their speech.
Marriage annulled over ChatGPT speech
According to Reuters, a couple from Zwolle, Holland, were married back in April 2025 but have had their marriage voided as of January 7, 2026.
As per the report, the person officiating the ceremony used a ChatGPT-generated speech, meaning that the couple didn’t actually swear to fulfil their marriage duties.
The AI-generated speech included lines such as “not only husband and wife, but above all a team, a crazy couple, each other’s love and home base” and “continue supporting each other, teasing each other and embracing each other, even when life gets difficult.”
ChatGPT is used by an increasing amount of people each day.
As per the court’s decision, they’ve asked for the marriage to be removed from the Zwolle registry.
“The court understands that the date in the marriage deed is important to the man and woman, but cannot ignore what the law says,” the report added.
It has not been revealed as to wheter or not the unnamed couple have remarried since the ruling, or if they’ve got it planned for the future. Though, sending out second wedding invitations might be a little awkward.
