A cat has returned home more than 400 days after being separated from its family by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
In late September 2024, the Southeastern part of the United States was hit by Hurricane Helene. The category four storm was the deadliest storm since Hurricane Katrina, making landfall on September 26 in Florida, producing winds of 140mph at its peak and doing around $80 billion in damage.
Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee were among the states most affected by the storm, even with the hurricane devolving into a post-tropical cyclone after a day of landfall.
Pets are regularly affected by the storms, with many getting separated from their families in amongst the chaos of things.
Cat reunited with family more than away after getting lost
However, over a year on from the storm, a cat named Gabby in North Carolina has finally been returned to it’s family after being handed into a shelter.
“When we scanned her, we discovered she had a microchip. With a little digging, we learned she had gone missing after Hurricane Helene — 443 days ago,” the Avery Humane Society posted on Facebook on December 14.
“Today, after all that time, she is finally back where she belongs — reunited with her family. Microchips are more than just a number; they are a lifeline. In times of chaos, natural disasters, or even everyday accidents, they can be the one thing that brings a lost pet home. But a microchip only works if the information attached to it is kept up to date.”
Gabby was reunited with the Hughes family, with one member, Payton Marie, commenting on the Humane Society’s post.
“So glad to have our Gabby home!!” she said.
Others called it a “Christmas miracle” for the Hughes family. “This makes my heart happy,” one said. “Such a happy ending!! Makes my heart happy!” added another. “What a happy ending! Merry Christmas,” another commented.
