A bear in South Lake Tahoe surprised locals by wandering behind the counter of an ice cream shop in mid-August.

The incident happened early Sunday on August 17 when sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of the animal making itself at home inside the store. Deputies managed to guide the bear back outside after taking photos of the encounter.

The El Dorado Sheriff shared the news alongside photos of the bear in a post on Instagram, revealing that they couldn’t believe their eyes when they entered the ice cream shop.

“In the early morning hours of last Sunday, August 17th, Deputies were dispatched to a call for service at the Ice Cream Shop at Camp Richardson in South Lake Tahoe,” they said in the post.

“The deputies could barely believe their eyes as they saw a large bear behind the counter of the shop. With some encouragement, the bear ultimately left, but only after showing interest in the strawberry ice cream. Thankfully, Fuzzy the bear caused barely any property damage and there was barely any cleanup.”

Bears are a common sight in California’s mountain communities, often venturing into towns in search of food. While attacks on people are rare, officials warn that encounters can cause property damage when animals struggle to find a way out.

This isn’t the first time a wild animal has taken over a local establishment. A few years ago, game store owner and Twitch streamer DSkoopa was shocked after a giant rat made its way into the store.
