An Amazon delivery driver is being credited with helping save an 84-year-old woman from a house fire after spotting flames outside her home and calling 911.
The fire broke out around 11:13 AM on February 11, 2026 at a one-story home in Street, Maryland, according to officials. The woman was home alone in her basement when she heard her dog barking.
When she went to investigate, she saw smoke through a window. After going upstairs, she noticed through the front door that flames had erupted on her front porch.
Amazon driver helps pull woman from burning home
As the woman opened the back door to let her two cats escape, an Amazon driver nearby saw the fire and contacted emergency services. The driver then noticed the woman attempting to escape through a sliding glass door on the side of the house and helped pull her to safety. Her dog was also able to escape.
Nearly three dozen firefighters from the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company and Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene. Crews brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes.
Investigators later determined the fire was sparked by discarded woodstove ashes. The Maryland Office of the State’s Attorney reported that the home sustained an estimated $250,000 in structural and content damage.
Following the incident, the state fire marshal’s office reminded residents to treat all ashes and coals as hot, even if they appear to have cooled.
“Take care to dispose of them wisely. Your house, deck, or garage is an unsafe place to store ashes. Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container and keep it outside and at least 10 feet from your home or nearby buildings,” the office stated.
Back in January, a dog in Oregon was credited with saving its owner’s life after playing a key role in helping search teams find her.
