A new Costco location is being built in Los Angeles, but this one’s a little different from the rest. It’s set to house 800 apartments directly above it.
When you think of amenities in apartment complexes, a pool or a gym might cross your mind. But what if there was a Costco quite literally on your doorstep instead?
That’s exactly what’s moving ahead in Baldwin Hills in LA, as Cotsco is set to open a new location as part of a mixed apartment building. While the retailer and grocery store giant will be on the ground floor, there will be 800 apartments built directly on top.
Yes, that means, in theory, you could simply head downstairs and find yourself in the glorious Costco food court with double chocolate chunk cookies available at a moment’s notice.
Would you live above a Costco?
Construction began in Fall, 2025, and is estimated to take around two and a half years. So by 2028, hopeful residents could soon be calling Costco their home, sort of.
With 800 brand-new apartments being built, 184 of them are being partitioned off for multiple levels of low-income housing, while the rest will be priced at 30%, 50%, and 80% of median income levels in the area, according to Housing Finance.

The project is also expected to create up to 400 new jobs in the area, many of which could go to locals given Costco’s reported track record of hiring within neighborhoods.
“This is truly a game changer and a huge investment in the community,” Brenda Ashby, an executive committee member of the Crenshaw Manor Community Association, said back in 2024. “We are excited to have quality groceries close to home.”
“This is the first mixed-use project in the nation to have Costco as an anchor tenant,” Thrive Living real estate firm founder Ben Shaoul said in 2025.
There’s no word yet on when Americans will be able to note their interest in the properties, but there may be some tough competition if the Costco Family wants to relocate.
