67 has topped a viral list of “banished” words for 2026, being joined by cooked and gifted as some of the words that people no longer want to hear.
Over the years, phrases that are used daily on the internet have slipped into the lexicon for everyone. Referring to people as chat, just as a Twitch streamer would do, is a pretty big example of this.
However, 67, which is more a number than actual words, has also become something that people use daily. The phrase, which derives from rapper Skrilla and his song ‘Doot Doot (67)’ was named as Dictionary.com’s word of the year at the end of 2025.
“Most other two-digit numbers had no meaningful trend over that period, implying that there is something special about 67. 67 shows the speed at which a new word can rocket around the world as a rising generation enters the global conversation,” they said.
6-7 ‘banished’ as word for new year
Yet, as 2026 has taken over, the phrase has become part of another list – Lake Superior State University’s 50th annual “Banished Words” list.
The Banished Words list is made up of words that, well, people no longer want to hear in the new year. This year, 67 has topped that list, with Cooked and Gifted also being named in the top ten.
“No one seems to know what it’s about, what it means. It’s just a cultural phenomena, kind of like last year we banished the word ‘skibidi,’” LSSU President David Travis said.
LSSU publishes their Banished Words list every year.
They also noted that “the volume of submissions for this one could have taken up the whole list,” jokingly adding that “at least slots 6-7” would have sufficed.
“Parents and guardians led the charge on this one, with some feeling this isn’t enough,” LSSU said about the addition of Cooked to the list.
“Another case of a noun being used as a verb,” they said about Gifted, with one nominator noting that it was also nominated back in 1994.
